IMC’s past accomplishments are of historical significance, and with a little help from you its future will be epic.
Ramona Grasslands
The Ramona Grasslands still has large areas of privately owned lands, and there is still significant interest by government agencies to acquire that land. Let’s see what we can do!
Some of what we have done:
An IMC yet-to-do … A very real challenge for the Grasslands is invasive species. The need for habitat restoration is apparent, and good community stewardship of our loved places would be to care for their on-going needs after acquisition.
First step, educate people who use the existing trails on how to prevent the introduction of more invasive species or from spreading existing invasive species into areas of the grasslands that are free from them.
Some of what we have done:
- IMC formed in 1991, and then created a conservation map to show linkages that if preserved would create contiguous open space. A map that was successfully used for our acquisition efforts.
- IMC put the grasslands on that conservation map and then in the public eye with our annual Audubon award-winning Raptor Watch which started in 1993. It may be hard to believe now that at one time the unique birding opportunity at the Grasslands was mostly unknown. Ever innovative, IMC tried to start an Eagle Fund to preserve land needed for nesting and hunting.
- Another IMC grassland success is Hardy Ranch, preserved through the collaborative grant-writing efforts of IMC and the Ramona Trails Association.
